This year’s celebration is focused on the Disability Integration Act (H.R. 555/S.117) and not letting the African American disability community be the last to know that they have the right to live in an accessible, affordable integrated community with the services and supports needed.
African Americans are more likely to be institutionalized, stuck in nursing homes, forgotten with no way out. (NYT September 2014 – “Minorities are Forced into Nursing Homes at a Greater Rate” by Karen Lincoln)
The Intersectional Justice Committee wants to shine a light so our fellow family members can see their way to freedom to live in integrated communities and thrive rather than die.
The entire Congressional Black Caucus, the over 800 civil and human rights, faith based, LGBTQIA, criminal justice reform and housing advocacy organizations and all interested are invited to join us in freeing African Americans, those multi-marginalized and disenfranchised persons with disabilities from institutions and nursing homes to live in freedom!
