Disability Activists Call on Congressman Peter Roskam to Support Constituents’ Constitutional Rights

Members of Chicago ADAPT, a disability rights group, have gathered at Congressman Peter Roskam’s district office at 2700 International Drive to demand that he support the right of disabled Americans to live in freedom. “We are the only people still locked up just for existing!” said Michael Grice. “I have lived in a nursing home. I’m never going back!”

At issue is Roskam’s failure to co-sponsor H.R. 2472, the Disability Integration Act, a bipartisan civil rights bill that would ensure anyone who qualifies for funding to live in an institution has the option to receive supports in the community instead. “Roskam says he supports fiscal responsibility in Medicaid,” said Kevin McPhan, “but he refuses to support giving people a chance at the home and community-based services that are preferred by seniors and disabled people. HCBS are less expensive and higher quality than the care provided in institutions. Moreover, providing us with services in our homes gives us access to the same freedoms and opportunities other Americans take for granted. Why would anyone want to spend more to get less?”

“Peter Roskam makes his own decisions about his life,” said Jazmine Coates. “His constituents should be able to, too. These are our constitutional rights.”
